My recomendation would be to go some where YOU would like to go. Your daughter is really too young to understand a vacation, or benefit from one. a nice weekend at a lake house would be nice. Try Up North in Michigan

A passport is just an identification that says you have the right to travel as a US citizen — other than losing their citizenship, or losing the right to travel as part of their specific sentence — felony status does not impact.

Best take a pack that is smaller than you think you need, you will always bring to much.
A backpack is getting more heavy during a journey, and you will walk with it more than you would expect.
A well known cliche is: Bring half the gear and double the money you think you need.
When you have walked half an hour with you pack you know why they tell you that.
You are the only one that can work out which brand is best for you, and how big a pack you need.
Go to a store with many packs and try several.
You get the best impression if you bring something heavy, like a bag of potatoes, to test the bag with, but nearly nobody will actually do that.
Since I have packs that have wheels too, I have found the best for a longer travel. For stairs, stations and so on I use it as back pack, when going for a longer walk it goes on its wheels.
And whatever you do, do not buy one of the packs with a day pack that zips on top of the big pack, nobody uses the zip-on option while traveling, as the day pack is always much to heavy, and the packs are almost all terrible to carry, specially when you use the small pack on your belly.
