Change. It is a word that frightens many. The advent of change in our lives is often greeted with hostility and mistrust, as a species we are creatures of habit and our greatest fears often lie in the unknown.
Musicians must constantly grapple with change. The world of music is an interesting case with regards to change in that you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Often a band will attempt to change their sound to remain fresh and exciting only to be shot down in flames. However if you stay the same you’re accused of being stale and past your best.
It is a difficult medium to maintain, and few artists manage it. It would appear to be getting harder as well as we see less career bands come through, and more one hit wonders and fad acts gain popularity very quickly before fading into obscurity.
One of the best examples I can think of where a band was affected drastically by changing their sound is the Smashing Pumpkins. The band released their debut album, Gish in 1991 on a wave of new grunge acts and early 90s alt-rock popularity. Although the album was well received, the Pumpkins didn’t really hit the big time until their second album, Siamese Dream.
Siamese Dream was in all respects a continuation of the sound that the band had established on Gish. Much more ambitious than many of their peers at the time, the album featured a lot of overdubs, studio tricks and guitar solos, all of which were unfashionable at the time. Despite this, the lead single, Today, was a hit on MTV and the band were acclaimed as one of rocks leading acts.
Their next album saw another shift in sound, this time they went into epic rock territory, employing even more instruments and much more expressive ideas. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was a huge double album that seemed to explore every side of Billy Corgans musical personality. Although a change in sound the root of their sound was still there. The album was littered with hard rock classics that anyone that loved Siamese Dream instantly connected to. Songs such as Bullet With Butterfly Wings and Zero became mid 90s alt rock classics alongside the more introspective 1979 and Thirty-Three.
Here was an example of a band that had managed to change their sound, remain fresh and gain fans and momentum on the way. It was a brave move to release such a huge body of work at a time when nu-metal was just beginning to gain popularity but it shows the power that changing your style can have in winning new fans and yet staying fresh.
It is important for a musician to progress and change, otherwise you become bored with what you’re playing. I can’t even imagine what it must be like to tour an album for a couple of years and then go back and write a follow up that is almost exactly the same. I’m sure that the Pumpkins felt the same and that changing it up with each release was really the only way that they could keep the band going.
Their next release, Adore, was their boldest step yet. After the bombastic might of Mellon Collie, Adore was a quiet, introspective album that showed a darker, mellower side of the band. Written after several tragic events in the lives of the band, it would seem a natural place to go. However with the world expecting another typical Smashing Pumpkins album full of epic rock songs with heavy guitars Adore was released full of piano melodies and electronic beats.
In short, the album was not well received by the press or the public. Instead of taking the album as it was as a brilliant piece of music it was lambasted for not adhering to the formula that the public had made for the band. Adore sold substantially less copies than the previous albums and the band haven’t reached the same height of popularity since.
The release of Adore was an example of where and artists needs to be brave if they feel that they have to change. Having poured everything into making Mellon Collie I’m sure that Billy Corgan had felt that he had exhausted that genre entirely and needed a new musical challenge. Had the band released Mellon Collie part two it would have inevitably been worse than the original and the band would have been picked apart in any case.
The key point for needing to progress is that if you really put your heart and soul into making the best possible album you can in a particular style, how can you be expected to repeat that without making something inferior? The answer is that you can’t. I think this is why we see a lot of flash-in-the-pan bands today who seem to be massive for six months and then disappear entirely. They make a fantastic debut, try to replicate it and fail.
So if you’re a musician my advice would be to never shy away from learning a new style, or taking a new influence, as you never know where your song writing may end up. Always try new things and push your boundaries and you’ll end up as a much better musician because of it. I’m glad that the Smashing Pumpkins took that brave step releasing Adore as I personally think it is a brilliant and highly underrated album. Ironically the style would come into fashion several years later with Radiohead producing a similar album with Kid A.

this list is badass!
i started having flashbacks when i got to the last 20 songs
i only have a few complaints. but instead of being a bitch about it like SOME PEOPLE, i’ll be subtle. here’s what i would’ve done differently:
1. instead of time of your life, put basket case.
2. there needs to be a sublime song, preferably santeria
3. needs a tool song, either stinkfist or prison sex
4. instead of 1979, have cherub rock
5. i would’ve liked some black crowes and maybe some rollins band and pantera.
that is all.

The Ramones are my all time favorite band. They will go down as the pioneers of punk and were under appreciated in their time.
My current favorite, The Gathering, will probably just be a footnote somewhere. While it is sad because they are immensely talented (and bands like fob, potd, papa roach and korn have none and have mainstream success) they have enough of a following in Europe that they will still be mentioned.
huh? diff ppl like diff music so everyone has dif opinions
The mini cribs are very cute! And could definitely give you more room! Here's just one I found at Target (and the price isn't too bad also!)

With the mobiles.. I would actually suggest getting different ones for each crib. Mainly because not all kids are going to like the same ones. My son had the Fisher Price rain forest mobile.. he screamed his head off every time he looked at it. So I had to take it down. But there were other mobiles (at a friends house or wherever) that he did actually like.
******************************************************
The little cubicles you posted are very cute. But they are out of stock. The idea is great though. I would suggest maybe also getting little boxes or bins to put in each shelf so that you can organize a bit more.
Here is a website I found that has fantastic cubbies/storage options for a daycare!
http://www.daycaremall.com/cubbies_shelves.html
******************************************************
The changing table you showed is really very cute, but I'm not sure how practical it would be for a daycare. Once the kids were mobile, they could easily pull at the baskets. I think you should maybe look at ones that are closed, and can also provide additional storage for things like diaper rash cream, powder, lotion, diapers, etc..

The rocking chair is nice. Personally, I've always prefered the gliders. That's what I had with my son. My mom has an old fashioned style rocking chair at her house, and has actually rocked over my sons hands or feet before.. and my son has also tripped over the legs of the chair. I also found that the gliders are just more comfortable because they always come with padding. =)
******************************************************
I like the lamp, but wonder if it's a little too girly? Perhaps something a bit more gender neutral?
http://www.target.com/Guidecraft-1st-Impressions-Table-Lamp/dp/B000NKK1U6/qid=1225307731/ref=br_1_2/601-9743376-2882525?ie=UTF8&node=319359011&frombrowse=1&pricerange=&index=tgt-mf-mv&field-browse=319359011&rank=pmrank&rh=&page=2
******************************************************
And with the valances, same thing. dragon flies are a little girly. Maybe something that doesn't have a specific design?
http://www.target.com/CoCaLo-Work-Zone-Window-Valance/dp/B00150T8R0/qid=1225307851/ref=br_1_9/601-9743376-2882525?ie=UTF8&node=13776011&frombrowse=1&pricerange=&index=tgt-mf-mv&field-browse=13776011&rank=pmrank&rh=&page=4
These are just suggestions, obviously! But bottom line – it's your daycare!! You and the other workers will undoubtedly make it a place that is both comfortable to you and the kids you watch. =)
Congratulations!!!

High School Cliques
High school is a combat zone. Perhaps incognito, high school is vile in every way, shape and form. From blondes to redheads, and populates to band geeks, there is no fair play. Students are masters of competition creating differences with style, interests, and looks. One thing that will never change, there is no escaping these dreadful high school cliques.
High school cliques are based on many factors. Some on wealth, style, athletisism, looks, and musical interest. Basically these are the main reasons that students have divided into cliques. If you are not rich, then you can’t afford the latest fashionable clothes or be able to spend money freely on some of the things, like a 12th pair of shoes.
Wealth, style and looks are some of the major elements of cliques. In some cases there is a mixture of these elements. This type of cliques is probably known as the popular group. This Clique could be a cross between the rich, and the most fashionable. Most students believe the only way to be recognized is to be with this crowd.
There are also cliques that are less judgmental than others. This clique was the band or drama crowd. Some people would refer this clique to be geeks. This group would hang out together because of their love of drama or music. This group would be most interested in hitting the right note on their clarinet, or recite the right line for an upcoming play.
The athletes have always been a clique. This group is the fittest and probably one of the most popular cliques. In some schools if you were the star athlete then you could get a gorgeous cheerleader. Sometimes this clique would exclude some teens that are lazy or not talented enough to be part of the team.
Cliques have dominated high schools for years, but each school is very different, some could smaller cliques and some could not. Some of these groups range from cliques of fashion or cliques of privilege. Although cliques are not as bad as they were when your parents went to school, but there still around in high schools.
What about D&D Geeks, or the set that competes to get the best car, with the most souped up engine. Or computer geeks that do nothing but compare notes on the lastest system specs.
You could try including the above, ive also been through your paper and made a few changes, whether or not you agree with them is up to you. Ive also had to make some assumptions as I live in the UK, and have never been to a High School, in the UK they are called colleges, and they don't have the cliques you mention, just groups of like minded people that hang out together any competition is good natured (most of the time). Try and flesh out what you have written already be looking at each clique in turn. Which social class is dominant in each clique? where do they go to hang out when not at school? do they hang out together outside school hours?
Hope ive helped.
love the lyrics and your voice :]
In the first place, your paper at present is all one paragraph! Yes, as the first answerer said, identify your thesis and state it clearly–and end the first paragraph there. (If the word "jazz" ends the first paragraph, it's still too long–you have an introduction almost as long as the whole body.)
The beginning is beautifully written, and it would be a shame to take out any of its evocative images. However, to help you get to the point sooner, you COULD save some of those details for a body paragraph or the conclusion. Suppose you break at "daydream and reality" and add a more concrete thesis at that point. Then you can go into the two schools of composition that Debussy participated in and influenced. You might also mention his debt to the Romantic movement.
Now for the mechanics and such:
1. Not "songs based off of," but songs drawn from" or "songs based on."
2. Something seems to have been left out of this sentence: According to One of Debussy’s teachers told him “I am not saying that what you do isn’t beautiful, but it’s theoretically absurd” (Kamien 440)
3. The past tense of "cast' is "cast"–not "casted."
4. "Debussy’s music can be understood through two important aspects of his music"–a bit repetitious? Why not "of it"?
5. "the main style of which Debussy was attributed to"–On generally attributes a quailty or characteristic or innovation to a person, or credits him for it. So reword this.
6. "Paris was at the hubbub of the revolution" I think you just mean at the hub. (Look both these words up.)
7. "different unlike ever seen before" Insert a comma before "unlike" and the word "anything" after it.
8. "viewed the paintings by the French Impressionists threatening to the “perfect” conventional form of art" Either change "viewed" to "considered" or insert "as" before "threatening."
9. Start a new paragraph with this sentence: "Debussy is generally viewed as an Impressionist, but many art historians claim that Debussy was also a Symbolist . . . . "
10. "Just like he composed music based off " Just AS he composed music based ON (This occurs again a sentence or two later.)
11. "enriched" Why past tense?
12. " Regardless of whether Debussy is seen as an Impressionist, Symbolist" Insert "a" before "Symbolist."
13.."remembered as the pioneer altered the course" "The pioneer WHO . . . ."
14. "A variety of events in Debussy’s life . . . " Start a new paragraph here.
Sorry, but I'm getting tired! In the remainder of the paper, look for logical places to begin new paragraphs. And don't say "unique to"–it's "unique among."
I think Tool’s Sober or Schism are more popular than half the songs. I guess I’ll let it slide since Tool should have a category of their own. Certainly one of a kind.
i think if someone says there emo they just want attention. i know a "emo" person. one odd freak……….
This is the most bunk list ever
WTF is Tool?
I agree there needs to be tool somewhere on the list but for the most part I’d say he covers most of the popular songs in the 90s
No one will read that amount of text on this site and I mean NO ONE..!!!
