the best exercises for beginners or for someone who hasn't done much for a long time would be to start of with gentle exercises, maybe a leisurely stroll, start with a gentle 20 minute walk 2-3 times a week for a few weeks then as you feel fitter start to walk faster and further, after a couple of months try adding some more exercises like push ups or sit ups, start off with as many as you can manage without hurting yourself and then gradually increase the number of repetitions.
before you start though see your doctor, explain that you want to start exercising and ask for a checkup to make sure there are no underlying medical conditions that would be made worse by the extra exercises
Here is what was recommended to me that I do on a weekly basis.
4 times a week/
start out 15 minutes each day of walking/ or walk your dog if you have one or bike ride or on a tredmile. So you could do
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. And once you get better you could start doing 30 minutes a day and add a day. and the most be just doing 6 days a week and 30 mintes each and no more.
But slowly start out at 15 minutes a day. This was recommend to me by my Dr. Which I have been keeping up for 3 month's and have lost weight since I have started, and Have also been on a diet also. Sorry it is lengthy but wanted to give you details since you asked.

It's always good to exercise your horse OFTEN to keep them in shape, but always leave a day or two for rest every week. Feeding your horse sweet feed say two days a week, and then a carrot or oat grain the rest before you ride is always great for their health and stamina, and let's face it, they love it! Of course your horse should have 24 access to food (be it grass, hay, etc.) and water. Good luck with your report!

Every exercise plan should include these three types of exercise:
1. Cardio (Running, walking 3.5-4 mph, jogging, anything that really gets your heart going)
2. Strength training (weight lifting in various positions; bicep curls, leg/calf curls, etc;)
3. Flexibility (stretching for the appropriate amount of time before and after cardio and strength training.)
1. Cardio: In order to lose weight, the FDA(Or whomever regulates this kind of thing) recommends 5 days of cardio, for 30-45 minutes each day. (In my case, I've been jogging/running 5 days a week–Monday through Friday.)
2. Strength training: In order to build muscle without over-exerting yourself, the rule of thumb is: One day in, one day out. For example: If you start strength training on Monday, you take Tuesday off. then do strength training again on Wednesday. This is so that your muscles will have time to rest, heal and adapt to the force they're exerting. Do not skimp out on 'down time'. Even Mr. Universe has to take some downtime! Mine, as a beginner is 3 times a week. I do things like pushups, sit ups, and some bicep curls. If you intend to also work your lower body, split that up within the week.
3. Flexibility. This is the most neglected type of exercise. It's very important that you don't skimp out on this, since it's the easiest, basic part of exercise. I call it the "duh" exercise, since we're told we should stretch before doing -anything-. You should stretch each group of muscles for 3 minutes before and after any exercising. I do this all 7 days a week since it takes very little time and you are supposed to be increasing your level of flexibility. It's very easy to skip a few days of stretching and become very stiff.
