What is the best place in Carribean or central America for october vacation?Hi,
I live in California, and my friends live in Europe. We all have vacations in early October and decided to meet half way. We are looking at Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and other Carribean destinations as well as Central America. We love nature, hiking, swimming and exploring – we def are NOT the all inclusive resort crowd and love adventure. Is it a hurricane/rainy season there in October? Guess we don't want get into stormy/wet weather or hurricane. Any advice please? What countries there are OK to visit at this time in terms of weather. Anything else you want to share will be appreciated. Thanks in advance

I wanted to fly from California to San Jose, Costa Rica. It would have cost $700.00 us. Instead I took a bus all the way …and it cost more.
Avoid El Salvador. I went through San Salvador just after their big earthquake. It wasn't a nice scene with everybody wearing breathing masks because of the dead under the rubble.
It's hard to find your way around. 'All' the streets have no street names. – Not even on the curbs. (Some cities and towns have their street names on the cement curbs)
The second biggest city …I think it's called Santa Anna. The people were really nice there.

Sometimes it can be a little bit scary, but if you stick to the big tourist spots you'll be fine.
Yeah Guatemala is really cool, and you can try Monterrico if you want to go to the beach. Its a nice laid back beach town. Still undiscovered by many tourists.

Probably Mexico since our dollar is still worth more. DO NOT head north to Canada. Although beautiful its almost dollar for dollar, if it is not already, and everything up there is 25% higher in price.
In terms of airfares, Costa Rica may be cheapest. Cancun, Mexico also can have pretty cheap airfare, and from there one can go to Belize and Guatemala.
Once, I took a plane to Cancun, then took a bus to Belize, then into northern Guatemala, then the Guatemalan highlands, then west into Mexico's Chiapas province, and north into the Yucatan and back to Cancun (southern Mexico is relatively cheap as well but not as cheap as Central America). Lots of fun. That would only be if you had a lot of time, though.
As far as once you're there, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua are all dirt cheap, especially in rural areas. I once stayed in a Guatemalan hotel that was $1/ night… the mattress was an inch thick and it was profoundly ugly but it was livable!

Your plan is good. Bus travel is very inexpensive and the better carriers, such as Hedman Alas, have modern, comfortable buses. They have an online site that shows their schedules. You can travel from SPS to La Ceiba and take a taxi to the Galaxy Wave, the ferry to Roatan. The taxi drivers know it as El. On the way back you can catch a bus in La Ceiba and go all the way to Guatemala City by way of Copan. Plan on spending at least a day and a night in Copan if you want to see the ruins. If you want to spend a day or so in La Ceiba the Pico Bonito National Forest is worth a tour. You can certainly begin your trip from Guatemala if you want and your dollar will go a long way in both countries. A little less in the tourist areas, of course. Enjoy the trip.
