Even though the Coffee Shop may seem like a convenient spot to dine and hang out at while in Union Square, we suggest that that you avoid it if possible. Notorious for it poor service, long wait and unpleasant encounters with its waitstaff (made up of mostly snooty but pretty out-of-work models) The Coffee Shop is a loungey pseudo-diner with a varied, inexpensive menu and sidewalk seating. It’s filled with blaring music, dim lights and a retro decor. The crowd is a mix of young NYU students, locals and passers-by- most of who are looking to be seen. The up side? The drinks are reasonable good and so is the food. The menu is a mixture of traditional american cuisines such as char-grilled hamburgers and Brazilian dishes like the thick, fishy moqueca stew of head-on shrimp, scallops and clams or the Brazilian Churrasquino (grilled beef sandwich).
